Halloween is coming...here are some DIY ideas for costumes

You don't have to go broke to celebrate Halloween. Creating some easy DIY adult Halloween Costumes can be a fun and cost-effective way to celebrate the holiday. Here are some simple costume ideas that you can put together with items you may already have or can easily find at thrift stores and craft stores: ADULT IDEAS (MOST CAN TRANSFER TO KIDS TOO)

  1. Mummy: Wrap yourself in white bandages or torn strips of white cloth and add some pale makeup for a spooky mummy look.

  2. Black Cat: Wear all black clothing and make or buy some cat ears. Draw on whiskers and a black nose with eyeliner or face paint.

  3. Zombie: Rummage through your closet for old, tattered clothing. Tear and stain them to look like a zombie outfit. Add pale makeup and fake blood for a gruesome touch.

  4. Vampire: Dress in all black, add a cape (you can make one from a dark sheet), and use white face makeup with red lipstick for the classic vampire look. Don't forget plastic vampire fangs.

  5. Ghost: A classic and incredibly easy costume. Cut holes for eyes in an old white sheet and drape it over yourself.

  6. Scarecrow: Wear jeans and a flannel shirt, stuff some straw or hay in the cuffs and collar, and add a straw hat. Paint on some "stitched" details with makeup.

  7. Gangster or Flapper: For a 1920s look, wear a suit and tie for a gangster or a fringe dress and feathered headband for a flapper.

  8. Minion: If you have yellow clothing and some blue overalls, you can easily create a Minion costume. Add some goggles (you can make them from cardboard) and draw on the characteristic Minion face.

  9. Rosie the Riveter: All you need is a denim shirt, red bandana, and you can create this iconic feminist symbol.

  10. Nerd or Geek: Wear high-waisted pants, suspenders, taped glasses, and carry a stack of books or a calculator. Add some faux braces for an extra touch.

  11. Crazy Cat Lady: Wear pajamas, a robe, and attach stuffed cats all over yourself. Carry around a cup of "tea" with a stuffed cat.

  12. Emoji: Pick your favorite emoji and create a cardboard cutout or mask to wear over your face. It's a simple and recognizable costume.

  13. Skeleton: Black clothing with white tape or paint to create a skeleton look. You can even use glow-in-the-dark paint for an extra spooky effect.

  14. Biker: Leather jacket, jeans, a bandana, and some temporary tattoos can give you a tough biker look.

  15. 80s/90s Throwback: Raid your closet for clothing from these decades, and don't forget to tease your hair and add some neon accessories for that retro vibe.

KIDS IDEAS (MANY OF THE ABOVE, PLUS...)

  1. Pumpkin: Paint a large orange trash bag (with holes cut out for arms and legs) or a pillowcase with a pumpkin face using fabric paint.

  2. Superhero: Use colored fabric or even old clothing to create a superhero cape and mask. Your child can be their own superhero with a unique name and powers.

  3. Witch or Wizard: Have your child wear dark clothing and make a witch or wizard hat from black construction paper or cardboard. Add a cape and a wand made from a stick or rolled-up paper.

  4. Pirate: Dress your child in black pants and a white shirt, and tie a bandana around their head. Create a cardboard eyepatch, and give them a cardboard sword to complete the look.

  5. Princess or Prince: Use an old prom dress or dress shirt and add some tulle or a cape for a royal touch. Crown your child with a tiara or a paper crown.

  6. Wizard of Oz Characters: Create costumes inspired by Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, or the Cowardly Lion using items from your child's closet and some creative crafting.

  7. Crayon: Dress your child in a solid color outfit, and create a cone-shaped hat that matches the outfit's color. Add the word "Crayon" to the front using fabric paint.

  8. Robot: Use cardboard boxes to create a robot costume. Paint the boxes with metallic colors, add buttons and dials, and cut out holes for the head, arms, and legs.

  9. Fairy: Use a tutu or a pretty dress, add some wings (you can make them from wire and tulle), and a wand made from a stick and ribbon.

  10. Animal: Choose your child's favorite animal and create a simple costume using clothing in the animal's colors and features like ears, tails, and masks made from cardboard and paint.

Remember to involve your child in the costume-making process to make it a fun and collaborative activity. Simple DIY costumes can be both memorable and enjoyable for yours and your child's Halloween celebration.
