Going to the Beach May Not Solve All My Problems... But I Should Probably Check

I saw that quote recently and laughed because honestly, it sounds exactly like something I would say.
Life gets busy. Between work, family, responsibilities, phone calls, emails, appointments, and everything else that comes with being an adult, there are days when it feels like the to-do list is never-ending.
When those days happen, you'll often find me heading toward the water.
Does the beach magically solve my problems? No.
The emails are still there when I get back. The deadlines haven't disappeared. The laundry still needs to be folded.
But somehow, after an hour walking along the shoreline, listening to the waves and feeling the salt air, things seem a little more manageable.
One of the things I am most grateful for is that I can do that anytime.
I don't say that lightly.
For years, I lived in New York's Finger Lakes region. It is beautiful in its own way, but for me, the long winters, gray skies, and cold weather were difficult. There were stretches of time when I dealt with health challenges that doctors struggled to explain. I went through countless appointments, blood tests, MRIs, and procedures searching for answers. Some days, simply getting through the day felt like an accomplishment.
When my husband and I made the decision to move to Coastal North Carolina in 2019, I knew I wanted sunshine and warmer weather. What I didn't realize was how much the lifestyle itself would impact my overall well-being.
Today, if I need a reset, I can drive a few minutes to the beach.
I can watch the sunrise over Oak Island.
I can take a quiet walk along Holden Beach.
I can sit by the water in Southport and watch the boats go by.
I can simply breathe.
That accessibility is something I never take for granted.
Living near the coast has taught me that happiness isn't always found in big moments. Sometimes it's found in the little things. A warm breeze. A spectacular sunset. The sound of seagulls overhead. Sand between your toes. A reminder that the world is much bigger than whatever problem is currently occupying your thoughts.
That's one of the reasons so many people fall in love with Brunswick County.
Many people start looking here because they want to retire near the water, purchase a second home, or escape harsh winters. What they often discover is something they weren't expecting: a lifestyle that encourages them to slow down and actually enjoy where they live.
Life isn't perfect here.
Traffic still happens.
Work still happens.
Stress still happens.
But when the beach is just down the road, it becomes a lot easier to find perspective.
Whenever friends and family visit, they're amazed that this is everyday life for us. What feels like vacation to them has become part of our normal routine.
And honestly, I still have moments where I stop and think, "Wow. I actually live here."
I know how fortunate I am.
I know not everyone can step away and watch the ocean when they need a break.
That's why I try to appreciate it every chance I get.
So if you're having one of those days where everything feels a little heavy, maybe take a walk. Find some sunshine. Get outside. If you're lucky enough to be near the water, head to the beach.
Your problems may not disappear.
But you might return with a clearer mind, a lighter heart, and a reminder that some of life's best therapy doesn't come with a bill.
Sometimes it comes with a sunrise, a salty breeze, and a pair of sandy shoes.
This would also make a great relocation blog because it subtly answers the question many people are really asking: "What's it actually like to live in Coastal North Carolina?" without sounding like a real estate sales pitch.
