When moving there is so much to consider. First, what do you want to take with you, what to sell or give away? After figuring out what you need to move, do you find friends to help you or do you hire a moving company? Well, that one could go either way. Hiring a moving company is costly, but it is something to consider. There are pros and cons to every situation. Here was my weekend.
My daughter, in Richmond, VA, was moving to a new apartment. A THIRD floor apartment!! Yes, two full flights of stairs!! She was moving into a one bedroom apartment, so there isn’t much, right? Maybe not, but her queen mattress and her dresser are HEAVY!! She didn't want to burden friends to help so, she hired movers. Yay!!
Her appointment time was between 12-6pm. We left our house at 5:30 am to get there when she could get the keys to her new apartment at 10am. Well, it was raining so hard you could barely see from Wilmington all the way to Richmond!! So, we were late. But that’s okay. She got her keys and we met her at the new place to check it out and to see what we could do before the movers came. They were to call when they were 45 minutes out, so we weren't tied to being at the packed up apartment.
So, we shopped for new stuff, jammed as much stuff in her rental car (another story) and took it back to the new apartment. I sure wish I had a pic of the rug that was almost as long as the car. We then went back to make sure everything was packed up at the old place.
To say we were tired from the drive, sitting around, and shopping was an understatement. So, a quick nap was had by Daddio! That was just the rejuvenation he needed!
At 5:25, the phone rings! Yay!! We can get moving, literally!! There were supposed to be 3 moving men, but 5 showed up, around 5:45pm! They said they just finished moving a full house and their truck was completely packed. They were happy that there wasn't too much to move. She only used about 1/3 of the truck. Until they got to the dresser!! Remember that dresser I spoke of? Two men carried it up the stairs. I am sure it weighed more than one of them did! There was a lot of grunting going on but not one time did these men complain. All I could think of if we had to move it was 1. how much complaining would be happening 2. we wouldn’t be speaking to each other and 3. how much would the copay’s cost for our blown-out backs, legs, arms, etc.
The moving men made quick work of moving her apartment. Around 7:45pm we were able to start unpacking and getting the apartment all set up. The way she packed some items, or jammed them into boxes, really had us laughing. We got most of it all set up before we finally crashed on the couch for the night.
Sunday morning we got up and headed to the hardware store and then a
stop for some much needed coffee. We then ventured back to the apartment to finish hanging things up. Then back to North Carolina we came. I was sad to leave my daughter and grand dog, but I am happy for their new start. I think they will settle in nicely.
I cannot thank the moving men for all of their hard work and professionalism. After sleeping on the couch I feel like I’d been hit by a truck, I cannot imagine what it would have been like had she not hired movers.
